According to Reuters in a report on Thursday, June 12, 2025, South Africa’s pay television group, MultiChoice, is planning to offer its subscribers sports-only package on the DStv following loss of revenue and customers, especially in Nigeria.
According to the report on its X handle and website, MultiChoice is planning to unbundle its sports channels into a separate subscription package, quoting its its Chief Executive Officer, Calvo Mawela, as saying on Thursday, in a move that might help it retain many of its subscribers.
DStv currently has various packages, including Compact, Compact Plus, Premium, among others, and many of its subscribers, especially in Nigeria, have complained about the high cost of subscription, which had made them to stop paying.
In fact, according to report in the Nigerian newspapers today, MultiChoice has lost 1.4 million DStv and GOtv subscribers in the past two years due to increase in subscription prices and there are indications that more subscribers may dump the outfit.
Reuters quoted him: “As part of our product offering, we have always had this project that we ran every year where we look at our packaging structures, similar to what Sky did some years back where they had a basic package, they had a sports package on the side (and) they had a general entertainment package on the side.
“We’ve accelerated that project in terms of getting us to finalize which direction we’re going to take in this financial year. But yes, we are considering all options as part of a broader product offering going forward.”
