Popular Yoruba Nollywood actress, Adekemi Taofeek, has shared a distressing experience she had while trying to make a return to the movie industry after taking time off to focus on her family.
In an interview on Kunle Afod’s official YouTube channel, she recounted how a respected director mistreated her on set despite their prior agreement.
Taofeek explained that after giving birth, she had initially decided not to return to acting immediately because she wanted to prioritize her family.
However, a director she admired reached out and convinced her to take part in a project, assuring her that she would only be needed for a day. Trusting his words, she agreed to the job and made arrangements to be on set.
Upon arrival, however, things did not go as expected. On the first day, she was not given any scenes to shoot, leaving her idle despite their agreed-upon schedule.
By the second day, she realized that her time was being wasted, so she asked someone to bring her child to the location, ensuring she could balance work and motherhood.
The situation took a turn for the worse when, at midnight, the director called her, saying he needed her immediately. Although it was an odd hour, Taofeek, committed to professionalism, left her child at the hotel and rushed to the set.
However, she was met with further disappointment. She remained on standby until 3 a.m. without being called to act, making her feel both disrespected and undervalued.
Adding to her frustration, she sensed that the crew was treating her differently because she was a nursing mother who had taken a break from the industry. Feeling hurt and unappreciated, Taofeek decided to leave the set.
In her words; “When I had my child, I never intended to return to work immediately because I’m a family-oriented person. I wanted to take my time before going back to the movie industry. However, a director I respected called me and asked me to come and shoot for a day. We had already agreed on a price, but when I got to the set, I didn’t do anything on the first day. As the second day approached, I asked someone to bring my child. At 12 a.m., the director called me, saying he needed me, so I left my child at the hotel and went to the location.”
“Many things happened there that made me feel disrespected. Up until 3 a.m., I hadn’t shot any scenes, and my child was still in the hotel. Just because I was a nursing mother and had been away from the industry for a while to focus on my family, they started treating me as if I had lost my dignity or was no longer a star. Feeling embarrassed, I decided to leave. The next day, the hotel asked me to check out since my payment had expired. I hadn’t planned on staying more than two days based on my prior agreement. Despite everything that happened, neither the director nor any crew members called to check up on me,” she added.
