Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation, has commented on the ongoing nationwide protests against poor governance, expressing concern over the criminal activities that have emerged during these demonstrations.

He criticised individuals who have taken advantage of the protests to engage in looting, particularly in Kano State, where reports of mass theft have surfaced.

Keyamo remarked that those already inclined to criminal behaviour have seized the opportunity to commit their crimes under the guise of legitimate protests.

He acknowledged the right to peaceful demonstrations but stressed that protests should not be initiated without the ability to control their direction and consequences.

His statements come amidst rising tensions and unrest as citizens express their frustrations over governance issues.

Videos circulating online depict residents in Kano breaking into government properties and stealing items, highlighting the chaotic turn of events during the protests.

Keyamo’s comments reflect a broader concern about the potential for protests to devolve into violence and lawlessness.

He emphasised the need for responsible leadership and the importance of maintaining order during demonstrations.

While he supports the right to protest, he cautioned against the risks associated with such actions when they lack proper organisation and oversight.

Keyamo stated on his X handle, “What has simply happened is that those who were already inclined to robbery or are already armed robbers at night have been given the license and opportunity to commit their crime in broad daylight under the guise of a ‘legitimate’ protest.
