In a recent statement via his official X account, Chidi Odinkalu, a law professor and former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, has criticized Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
Odinkalu reacted to Maikyau’s appeal for stop and dialogue regarding planned nationwide peaceful protests against Nigeria’s economic hardships and insecurity.
“Anyone who can issue a 7-page release in 11-point typescript to tell competent, adult citizens they should not protest is either illiterate, a comedian, or #BoughtAndPaidFor & that is being very generous. I cld be more damning. Pls ignore this man,” he wrote.
Several Nigerian lawyers have also voiced their disappointment with Maikyau’s stance.
They argue that Maikyau does not represent all Nigerian lawyers in his appeal for stop.
The protests are in response to growing economic hardships and insecurity in the country.
Many Nigerians feel that the government has not done enough to address these issues.
In his statement, Maikyau urged for dialogue and stop, hoping to prevent any potential violence.
