In a recent interview from 9:20 on Arise TV, on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, the National Publicity Secretary of the Arewa Consultative Forum, Professor Tukur Mohammed-Baba, shared his assessment of Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The discussion focused on voter expectations, political alliances, and the prospects of major opposition figures seeking to challenge the ruling party.
Mohammed-Baba observed that many Nigerians, particularly in the North, remain concerned about insecurity, economic hardship, and the lack of clear policy alternatives from political leaders. He argued that voters are increasingly interested in practical solutions to national challenges rather than political rhetoric or personality-driven campaigns.
Speaking during the interview, Mohammed-Baba stated, “I will be very startled if Peter Obi performs as well as he did in 2023.” He made the remark while discussing the changing political environment and the factors that could influence electoral outcomes in the next general election.
According to him, Peter Obi’s strong performance in the 2023 presidential election reflected a unique political moment that may be difficult to replicate under current circumstances. He suggested that shifting political alliances and developments within opposition politics could affect voter behavior ahead of 2027.
The ACF spokesperson also argued that presidential aspirants must move beyond popularity and demonstrate a clear understanding of the country’s pressing challenges. He stressed that Nigerians are looking for concrete proposals on issues such as insecurity, economic recovery, infrastructure development, and job creation.
Mohammed-Baba further maintained that Northern Nigeria is politically diverse and that no candidate should assume automatic support from any region. He noted that voters are becoming more critical and are likely to evaluate candidates based on their ability to offer credible solutions to the nation’s problems.
He concluded by urging political leaders to focus on policies that directly address the concerns of ordinary Nigerians, emphasizing that the success of any candidate in 2027 will depend largely on public confidence in their vision and capacity to govern effectively.
