Public Affairs Analyst, Chibunna Ubawuike, has stirred fresh debate on Nigeria’s security situation after making strong comments on alleged links between some public figures and worsening insecurity in the country.
Speaking during an interview from 5:32 on TVC News, on Monday, 8 June, 2026, Ubawuike expressed concern over what he described as the continued influence of individuals he believes should be held accountable for statements and actions connected to rising insecurity and banditry in several parts of the country.
During the programme, Ubawuike specifically questioned the role of Islamic cleric Abdulrasheed Gumi in the broader security discourse, accusing him of contributing to narratives that, in his view, undermine national security efforts. He stated: “The man called Sheikh Gumi, what is he still doing walking free. He is an enabler of insecurity. Government should go after him.”
His comments have since triggered renewed discussions across public and policy circles, with differing opinions emerging on the boundaries between free speech, public commentary, and national security responsibility.
Security challenges in Nigeria have continued to dominate national conversations, with frequent cases of kidnapping, banditry, and armed attacks reported in various regions. Analysts note that the situation has created widespread fear among citizens, particularly in rural communities where law enforcement presence is often limited.
Ubawuike’s remarks reflect a growing frustration among some commentators who believe that stronger accountability measures are needed not only for armed groups but also for individuals whose statements or engagements are perceived to influence or embolden criminal activity.
