Political Analyst, Barrister Darlington Agomuo, has criticised Senate President Godswill Akpabio over his recent remark that “Trump is on our neck,” describing the comment as diplomatically condescending.
Speaking during an interview from 14:21 on Voice of the People TV, Agomuo said such a statement should never have been made openly, especially in the presence of cameras and the press. According to him, the Senate President’s words could send the wrong signal about Nigeria’s sovereignty and the nature of its diplomatic engagements with the United States under President Donald Trump.
“He shouldn’t have said that. He shouldn’t have said that openly. If he is in a quiet session, he can but openly where cameras are everywhere. It seems as if America is now wielding a big stick,” Agomuo said.
The analyst noted that publicising such pressure, whether political, diplomatic, or policy-related creates an impression that Nigeria is being coerced by a foreign power, a narrative that could weaken the country’s standing in international affairs. He argued that while countries often face diplomatic demands or expectations, these matters are usually handled discreetly to avoid misinterpretations or internal tensions.
Agomuo warned that Akpabio’s comment might be exploited by political actors or foreign observers who may interpret it as evidence of external dominance or undue interference in Nigeria’s domestic affairs. He added that diplomatic communication, particularly involving global powers, must be carefully managed to protect national dignity. View, More,
