Johnson made the remarks while speaking at the Imo Economic Summit, an event aimed at strengthening trade relations and investment opportunities between Nigeria and the UK.
“I’m very proud of what we export to Nigeria,” Johnson said, listing key British exports such as pharmaceuticals, financial services, and other professional services. He also noted the UK’s significant trade in consumer products, including substantial quantities of whiskey, emphasizing the breadth and quality of goods and expertise Britain offers to its African partner.
However, the former Prime Minister was equally effusive in acknowledging Nigeria’s contributions in return. He highlighted the country’s exports of oil and gas, which play a critical role in the global energy market and support the UK’s energy needs. Beyond resources, Johnson singled out Nigeria’s cultural and human capital, including Nollywood movies, which have achieved global acclaim, and the presence of highly skilled professionals such as doctors, nurses, and technology experts working across the UK.
“Your country sends us brilliant doctors, nurses, and tech geniuses,” Johnson said. “We are very, very grateful for that.” His remarks underscored the mutually beneficial nature of UK–Nigeria relations and the wide-ranging interdependence that extends beyond traditional trade into services, culture, and human expertise.
