Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has once again sparked public conversation after making a bold statement about Nigeria’s defence system.

Speaking from 3:28 during a discussion on insecurity and the need for technological reform, Sowore argued that the country is still trapped in outdated security practices that cannot match modern threats.

During the conversation, he criticised the role of the Minister of Defence, saying the position has become more ceremonial than functional.

He stated that political appointees often focus on awarding contracts instead of fighting insecurity. Sowore insisted that technology, not political appointments, is what Nigeria needs to effectively tackle terrorism.

In his words, “A drone can locate more terrorists than the minister of defence can in 20 years.” He said this to show how simple technological tools can achieve better results than long years of traditional military practices.

Sowore explained that with proper deployment of surveillance drones, Nigeria can monitor forests, border areas, and remote regions where criminal groups hide.

He noted that drones do not get tired, do not collect bribes, and cannot be influenced by political interests. Instead, they provide real-time information and help security agencies respond faster.

He added that Nigeria has spent billions on defence without achieving meaningful results because decision-makers refuse to adopt transparent and modern systems.

According to him, insecurity continues to grow because leaders rely on outdated methods rather than embracing technology that has helped other countries improve their security.

Sowore also linked insecurity to poverty, saying the long-term solution is social investment. However, he maintained that technology must be the foundation of Nigeria’s immediate response to terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping.

He said if given the chance to lead the country, he would completely reform the defence sector by removing unnecessary political positions and replacing them with drone operators and tech professionals who understand modern warfare.

Sowore’s comment has triggered fresh discussions among Nigerians, especially on social media, as many citizens continue to demand new ideas that can reduce the rising insecurity across the nation. View, More,
