The nomination of Reno Omokri, former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, as an ambassador has stirred controversy and division among Jonathan’s Ijaw kinsmen.
According to Daily Post, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday released a 32-man ambassadorial list, with Omokri included among the nominees.
In his reaction, President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), Prof. Benjamin Okaba, questioned the credibility of some of those selected, alleging that several nominees still had unresolved fraud cases with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Using Omokri as an example, Okaba argued that the appointment looked more like compensation for Omokri’s recent public support for President Tinubu. He stressed that, at a time of deepening security challenges, Nigeria should be represented abroad by individuals whose character and integrity are unquestionable.
He further criticised what he called the continued recycling of familiar political figures into sensitive roles, warning that such decisions shape how Nigeria is perceived on the global stage.
“Some of these nominees have a lot of cases with the EFCC. Their integrity is questionable. I saw the former INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, on the list and was surprised he was included,” Okaba said. View, More,
