In a recent interview shared by Channels Television from from 8:50, Retired Police Officer, Rtd AIG Abitu Yaro, issued a strong caution regarding the ongoing debate over the withdrawal of police personnel from VIP protection duties.

Speaking during the program, the former Assistant Inspector General stressed that the move, though well-intended, could expose the country to serious security risks if not carefully implemented.

AIG Yaro argued that Nigeria’s current security environment is far from stable, and any abrupt change in the protection architecture of politically exposed persons could lead to unintended consequences. According to him, the state must recognize the vulnerability of individuals who play strategic roles in national development and decision-making.

He emphasized this point clearly when he said, “I wouldn’t have ordered that police will leave VIP because the VIPs are very important segment of our nation.”

He added that while all citizens are equal, the level of exposure and the nature of threats faced by key national figures require additional layers of security.

Yaro noted that the Nigerian Police Force is already understaffed, and redeployment decisions should be handled with utmost caution, backed by proper assessment and planning. He maintained that security reforms must prioritize strengthening the mobile police units, improving training, and increasing recruitment instead of abruptly stripping VIPs of police protection.
