The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has disclosed a major directive issued by the President aimed at strengthening the country’s security operations. Speaking to journalists shortly after his meeting with the President, Egbetokun explained that the current security challenges require an immediate increase in manpower, especially in areas affected by rising criminal activities. As a result, the President has ordered that police officers currently assigned to VIP protection duties be withdrawn and redeployed to active field operations.
According to the IGP, the President emphasized the need for every available police officer to contribute directly to the fight against crime. Egbetokun stated that this decision was taken after a detailed briefing on the security situation across various states. The move, he added, is expected to significantly enhance the strength and responsiveness of ongoing security interventions nationwide.
In his words, “Mr President gave direct order that immediately, police men providing VIP protection should be made available to join the forces. The police men providing protection for VIP presently are to be withdrawn and they are to complement the ongoing efforts against criminalities.”
Egbetokun further explained that while VIP protection is important, the current national security needs are more pressing. Redirecting officers from luxury escort duties to the field will allow the Police Force to respond more swiftly and efficiently to threats. He assured the public that the withdrawal will be implemented in phases to avoid disruption, and genuine cases requiring security will be reviewed separately.
The IGP also reiterated that the Nigerian Police Force remains committed to restoring peace and ensuring that communities feel the impact of increased police presence. The decision, he said, reflects the administration’s dedication to prioritizing citizens’ safety over privileges enjoyed by a few. View, More,
