According to Jerusalem post, Israel has unveiled a sweeping defense expansion plan that will see it dramatically increase its fleet of advanced fighter jets, signaling a major shift in military strategy following recent regional conflicts.
Under the new initiative, the country will double its fleet of F-35 Lightning II stealth fighters from 50 to 100 aircraft, while also expanding its next-generation F-15IA fleet from 25 to 50. The move is part of a broader defense spending surge estimated at NIS 350 billion over the next decade.
The decision ends a long-running debate within Israel’s defense establishment over whether to prioritize stealth-oriented F-35 jets or the heavy-strike capabilities of the F-15IA. Instead, authorities opted to significantly boost funding to acquire both platforms.
Officials say the policy shift reflects lessons learned from recent confrontations with Iran and its regional allies, where both aircraft types played critical roles. The Israel Defense Forces relied heavily on its existing fleet of F-35s for precision strikes and intelligence gathering, while older F-15s demonstrated the need for modernization.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the expansion as essential for maintaining long-term military superiority. “Israel is stronger than ever, and Israel must always be much stronger than our enemies,” he said, emphasizing the importance of sustained air dominance across multiple fronts.
Defense Minister Israel Katz noted that the procurement forms part of a wider strategy to prepare for what officials describe as a “demanding security decade.” According to the Defense Ministry, the plan includes acquiring two new squadrons—one of F-35s from Lockheed Martin and another of F-15IAs from Boeing.
The agreements, worth tens of billions of shekels, will also cover logistics, maintenance systems, spare parts, and full integration into the Israeli Air Force’s operational structure.
Military analysts say the combination of aircraft will provide Israel with unmatched flexibility. The stealth capabilities of the F-35 allow it to evade advanced air defense systems and conduct deep-strike missions, while the F-15IA offers greater payload capacity and range for sustained operations.
The expansion is also tied to Israel’s long-term “Shield of Israel” defense framework, which aims to integrate emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and advanced electronic warfare into its military operations.
In recent years, Israel has already begun upgrading its capabilities. Deliveries of additional F-35 aircraft are ongoing, with more expected in the coming years as part of earlier agreements. Meanwhile, the country is also upgrading its fleet of F-16 jets rather than replacing them outright.
While the timeline for full delivery of the new aircraft extends into the early 2030s, officials insist the investment is necessary to ensure Israel maintains its qualitative military edge in an increasingly volatile region.
The expansion marks one of the largest defense procurement efforts in Israel’s history and underscores its commitment to air superiority as a cornerstone of national security…Read_More…
