Knee pain can make everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs, standing, or getting out of bed uncomfortable. It may result from overuse, injury, arthritis, or other medical conditions. Although home remedies cannot treat every cause of knee pain, these five approaches may help relieve mild discomfort and improve mobility.

1. Apply A Cold Compress

If your knee is swollen or painful after exercise or a minor injury, wrap an ice pack in a towel and apply it for 15–20 minutes at a time. Cold can help reduce swelling and temporarily relieve pain. Never place ice directly on your skin, and avoid applying it for too long.

2. Use Gentle Knee-Friendly Exercises

Keeping your knee completely inactive for long periods can increase stiffness. Gentle activities such as short walks on level ground, stationary cycling, or suitable range-of-motion exercises may help maintain movement. Stop if an activity significantly increases your pain, and seek professional advice if you are unsure which exercises are safe.

3. Try Warm Compresses For Stiffness

If your knee feels stiff without significant swelling or a recent injury, a warm towel or heat pack may help relax the surrounding muscles and improve comfort. Apply it for around 15–20 minutes, ensuring it is comfortably warm rather than hot. Avoid heat on a newly injured or swollen knee.

4. Maintain A Healthy Weight

If you carry excess body weight, gradually losing some of it may reduce the pressure placed on your knees during walking and other activities. Eating balanced meals and choosing low-impact exercise can help. If you are already slim, you do not need to lose weight to manage knee pain.

5. Elevate Your Leg When Swelling Occurs

If your knee is swollen, rest with your leg supported on pillows so that it is elevated comfortably. This may help reduce fluid buildup and ease discomfort. Avoid remaining in one position for too long, and gently move your knee as tolerated.
