According to a Friday 19 of September, 2025, report by IRNA News Agency, Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has urged the United Nations Security Council to step in and prevent escalating tensions surrounding the 2015 nuclear deal, calling for a diplomatic resolution over confrontation.
Speaking to reporters, Araghchi emphasized that Iran has offered a constructive solution to the ongoing impasse, presenting what he described as a reasonable and practical plan to the three European signatories of the nuclear accord — France, Germany and the United Kingdom (UK).
“I am pleased that President Macron has recognized the reasonableness of my proposal. However, he and the international community should be aware that I have the full backing of all bodies within the Islamic Republic of Iran, including the Supreme National Security Council,” he stated.
Araghchi expressed frustration with what he called the European trio’s reluctance to meaningfully engage with Iran’s plan. He criticized the group for focusing on procedural objections rather than the proposal’s content, citing one particular claim that questioned the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s authority to speak on behalf of the entire government.
He further questioned the effectiveness of ongoing European diplomatic efforts, arguing that without decisive action from the UN, the region risks entering a deeper crisis.
“The UN Security Council must prioritize diplomacy over confrontation,” he urged, calling for stronger multilateral involvement.
According to Araghchi, Iran has already demonstrated good faith by signing a renewed cooperation agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and putting forward what he described as a forward-looking offer.
He characterized the proposal as “creative, fair, and balanced,” adding that it “could quickly resolve key disagreements and avert a crisis” if implemented.
Araghchi concluded with a stark reminder that the success of diplomacy depends on collective responsibility: “There is still a way forward, but Iran cannot be the only actor shouldering the responsibility for action.” See, More, Here>>>>
The remarks come amid renewed international efforts to salvage the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) from which the United States unilaterally withdrew in 2018.
