According to a report by the Jerusalem Post on Thursday 18 September, 2025, this announcement by Syria’s new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, comes amidst a complex backdrop of ongoing regional conflict and shifting alliances; it signals the most significant progress between the two enemy states in decades, and it could be finalised within days.
The deal is with the administration of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel.
The security agreement, according to Ahmad Abu Mohammad Al-Julani, better known as Ahmed Al-Sharaa, the Interim President of Syria and Head of Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS), is a must-have for peace in the region.
He outlined the non-negotiable conditions, such as complete observance of Syria’s airspace and territorial integrity, and the United Nations will be watching to make sure everyone follows the rules.
He went on to explain the US government’s role, saying that Trump’s administration was not pressuring Syria but rather acting as a mediator, proposing a careful diplomatic juggling act to achieve Syrian goals without seeming to give in to Israeli or American demands.
Israeli policies were diametrically opposed to American goals of a united and stable Syria, according to President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, who warned that this was a very dangerous development.
Israel wanted to stay at key places it captured after December 8, including Mount Hermon, but Syria wanted Israeli troops to evacuate. Israel plans to maintain control of the sites, according to Israeli ministers. Additional agreements may be possible after the security accord is implemented.
