Reverend Father John Chinenye Oluoma, a Catholic priest in Abuja, condemned Costly burials in a recent post on his official Facebook page.
Father Oluoma criticized the extravagant expenses often associated with burials, comparing them unfavorably to the more modest and practical customs observed by Muslims.
He said, “Costly burial makes no existential and essential sense. The Muslims have understood this truth and live it better than most of us. The white people with better economies and luxuries of wealth have cut down the frivolous and unnecessary expenses at burial, why are we still stuck in it?”
He condemned the practice of denying Christian burial to those who cannot afford these levies, calling it regrettable and unjustifiable.
Citing the Bible, Father Oluoma reminded his followers that humans come into the world with nothing and leave the same way. He questioned why luxury and wealth are displayed at burials when the deceased did not experience such opulence in life.
He pointed to the resurrection of Christ, noting that Jesus left behind his burial clothes and emerged with a glorified body, indicating that material possessions are unnecessary for resurrection.
Father Oluoma concluded by praising Muslims and some Western cultures for their simpler and more practical burial practices.
He called on Christians to reconsider their customs and reduce the financial burden associated with burials.
