Breast cancer does not always begin with a noticeable lump. Sometimes, changes around the armpit, collarbone or other areas near the breast may be among the signs that something needs medical attention. Although these symptoms can have many causes, knowing what to look for can help you seek care early.
1. A Lump In The Armpit
A new lump in the armpit can sometimes be a sign of breast cancer because breast tissue and lymph nodes extend into this area. Breast cancer can spread to nearby lymph nodes, causing them to become enlarged. However, armpit lumps are also commonly caused by infections, inflamed skin or other non-cancerous conditions. Get a new or persistent lump checked by a healthcare professional.
2. Swelling Around The Collarbone
Swelling or a lump near the collarbone, particularly above it, may sometimes indicate enlarged lymph nodes. In some cases, breast cancer can spread to lymph nodes in this region. However, infections and other medical conditions can also cause swelling in these areas. Do not assume it is cancer, but do not ignore a new lump that persists.
3. Swelling Or Changes In The Arm
Unexplained swelling in one arm can occasionally occur when breast cancer affects lymphatic drainage, especially if cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes or treatment has damaged lymphatic vessels. The arm may feel heavy, tight or swollen. This condition is known as lymphoedema, but it can also have other causes that require medical assessment.
