Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that part of the insecurity in Nigeria can be traced to events that followed the death of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya.

In an interview from 31:40 with News Central TV, Obasanjo said Gaddafi recruited mercenaries from many countries, including Nigeria, to fight for him. He said when Gaddafi was killed, the mercenaries scattered and returned to their various countries.

Obasanjo stated that many of them came back to Nigeria with weapons they had acquired during the conflict and began to sell them. He said this increased the availability of illegal arms and made security problems worse
