According to a report by the Punch on Saturday, July 26, 2025, eyewitnesses reported that the Friday evening attacks began simultaneously around 7:30 PM across three neighboring communities in Arondizuogu. The gunmen, estimated to be about 15 in number and all wearing black masks, arrived in a convoy of six motorcycles. They first struck at Ndiejezie’s popular “Ugochukwu Beer Joint,” where they opened fire for nearly 10 minutes before moving to other locations.
“The attackers were methodical,” said Chidi Nwafor, a survivor receiving treatment at St. Mary’s Hospital. “They first shot out the lights, then started targeting people. Some were shouting ‘No more alcohol in Biafra land’ as they fired.”
A community source who witnessed the attacks told our correspondent, “I heard they also shot at people who were playing a draft game to while away time. They showed no mercy – just kept firing even when people were already on the ground.”
Local medical sources indicate at least 15 wounded victims are being treated across three hospitals, with four in critical condition. The attacks have triggered panic buying of food items as residents fear further violence.
The police anti-terrorism unit has cordoned off the affected areas, conducting house-to-house searches. Forensic experts were seen collecting bullet casings—mostly from AK-47 rifles—at the crime scenes.
CP Danjuma revealed that the attackers left behind IPOB/ESN leaflets demanding enforcement of their “sit-at-home” order. However, security analysts note this contradicts IPOB’s recent public disavowal of violent enforcement methods.
The Arondizuogu Progressive Union has called for immediate military deployment, while youth groups have begun organizing night patrols. Local businesses remain shuttered as tension grips the area.
“This is the third attack this month targeting social spots,” lamented Chief Innocent Okafor, chairman of the local traders association. “We’re being punished for refusing to obey their illegal sit-at-home orders.”
