FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has criticized former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s pledge to use commercial flights if elected president, describing it as unrealistic political posturing.

Speaking in a media coverage by TVC, Wike questioned the authenticity of Obi’s public gestures, including his practice of serving food at events. “People play to the gallery. This is not where a presidential candidate will be coming to serve food. And you know this is pretence. How long will he be serving the food? How long as a president that you carry food and be serving?” Wike asked.

The FCT Minister challenged public perceptions of such actions as humility. “And then Nigerians are laughing and saying, ‘Oh, he’s humble.’ Who told you that is humility? Who told you that? And you people give audience to that kind of thing,” he stated.

Wike particularly dismissed Obi’s commercial flight promise as impractical from a security standpoint. “And somebody will be telling you that when I win as a president, I will use a commercial plane, and you think he’s telling you the truth—which security would allow you to do that. We must tell ourselves the simple truth,” he argued.

The minister suggested that Obi’s current behavior differs significantly from his previous conduct as governor. “When he was governor he wasn’t serving food; now because election is coming he’s coming to serve and to say I want to serve. And then these Nigerians you like—people who play to the gallery; they don’t like people who will tell you the simple truth,” Wike said.

Wike also defended Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo’s requirement for advance notification of Obi’s visits, citing security concerns related to coalition activities. He argued that as the state’s chief security officer, Okpebholo needs to remain vigilant about potential chaos that could be blamed on his administration.

Governor Okpebholo has claimed in a viral video that three people died in Benin following Obi’s visit to a nursing school in Edo State, though details of this alleged incident remain unreported.
