Former presidential candidate and Labour Party chieftain, Mr. Peter Obi, has described the late President Muhammadu Buhari as a leader who did his best for Nigeria within the limits of his capacity. Obi made this known during an appearance on Arise Television on July 16, 2025, as tributes continued to pour in following the passing of the former president.

Speaking on why he was absent from the funeral, Obi explained, “I want to come here yesterday but there was no flight, and even if you have a flight, you can’t land in Katsina Airport. It was all closed because there was a lot of dignitaries. And it’s believed that the mourning continues to tomorrow. So, whoever comes, today tomorrow is still part of the mourning. And we are mourning for our departed brethren.”

Please care for the poor Nigerians. That’s what I always remember. And I believe that he did his best within his capacity.”

Responding to a question on what lessons Nigerians should take from Buhari’s life, Obi said, “Well, we have to all learn how to serve our country. Knowing that one day we will all be called back by our Creator.”

On the issue of Buhari’s modest lifestyle and simplicity, Obi concurred: “Of course. For those of us who, like I said, am not close to him. I only met him during my campaign. And I remember vividly what I call sincere appeal for fighting and caring for the poor.”
