Former House of Representatives Minority Leader, Farouk Aliyu, has urged Nigerian leaders to reflect deeply on their conduct while in office, cautioning that the way they are remembered after leaving power often depends on the quality of their leadership. He stressed that leaders must be mindful of the long-term consequences of their actions, as public opinion can be especially unforgiving, even in death.

During a recent interview, Aliyu expressed disappointment over the negative commentary directed at the late President Muhammadu Buhari on social media. He noted that the criticism and insults circulating online following Buhari’s passing should serve as a serious warning to those currently occupying positions of power.

Aliyu pointed out that while it is impossible for any leader to satisfy everyone, the reactions seen after a leader’s death often reflect unresolved public grievances. He suggested that the backlash Buhari received from some quarters highlights the deep divisions and dissatisfaction that can linger long after a presidency ends.

He emphasized that today’s leaders should pay attention to how former leaders are being judged and draw lessons from their experiences. The enduring resentment or disapproval expressed by citizens underscores the need for leadership marked by empathy, fairness, and service to the people.

Aliyu encouraged those in authority to lead with integrity and strive to minimize the number of people who may carry lasting resentment. He acknowledged that perfect leadership is unattainable, but argued that efforts to do the right thing, even when unpopular, can shape how a leader’s legacy is ultimately remembered.

In his words, “If you look at social media, you will find there are so many people that are bringing insults on the late president. It’s unfortunate. So the leaders that are alive today should take lessons from these kind of things. There are some that will never forgive you. Even because of those ones, try to do the best you can.
