Human rights activist, Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, has raised concerns over worsening insecurity in Rivers State, alleging that armed attackers invaded an Ikwerre community and abducted a local vigilante chief.
Onwubiko made the claim during an interview from 19:08 on SYMFONI TV while discussing the broader security situation in the country. He said the reported incident underscored the spread of violent attacks beyond areas traditionally associated with banditry and highlighted what he described as growing threats to rural communities.
According to Onwubiko, “As we speak, the people they call bandits invaded Ikwerre community in Rivers State and kidnapped vigilante Chief and escaped into the bush.”
The activist said the reported abduction was troubling, particularly because it involved a community vigilante leader, a category of local actors often seen as first responders in areas facing security threats. He argued that such an incident, if left unchecked, raises fresh concerns about the vulnerability of local security structures and the ability of communities to defend themselves.
Onwubiko also criticized what he described as the government’s inadequate response to escalating insecurity, warning that attacks of this nature should not be treated as isolated events. He called for urgent intervention by security agencies to rescue the abducted vigilante chief and strengthen protection for communities facing similar threats. Read_More…
