Hon. Henry Shield has said Nigeria’s opposition needs to adopt a stronger approach, arguing that the current style of opposition politics has made it easier for President Bola Tinubu’s administration to operate without enough pressure.
Speaking during an interview from 1:17 on News Central TV, Shield criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s approach to opposition politics, describing it as elite-driven and largely limited to issuing press statements, online criticism, and political exchanges. He argued that this strategy has not produced the level of resistance needed to hold the government accountable.
Shield also spoke about the NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, describing him as a naturally calm and respectful leader whose personality reflects his upbringing. According to him, Obi is not the type of politician who would mobilize people to directly confront the government, adding that while this is not a negative quality, it may not be enough in Nigeria’s current political climate.
He maintained that the country’s opposition requires outspoken and fearless politicians who are willing to challenge those in power directly, regardless of the consequences. As examples, he mentioned former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, saying they represent the kind of bold and confrontational opposition figures Nigeria needs at this time.
In his words, “Peter Obi will never go and tell you, ‘Let’s go and confront the government’; no, he’s by nature a gentleman, which is not a bad thing. But in Nigeria’s current situation, we need firebrands like El Rufai, like Adams Oshiomhole.”
