Senate Deputy Whip Onyekachi Nwebonyi has expressed optimism that the ongoing political standoff between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike will soon be resolved, allowing the governor to resume his full duties.

Senator Nwebonyi in an interview with TVC from 11:44 indicated that behind-the-scenes negotiations are progressing toward reconciliation between the feuding political camps. “The problem of Rivers, to me, we’ve taken a stand as a National Assembly, and it is now between the presidency and other relevant bodies to handle same,” Nwebonyi stated. “But in no time, both parties will soon come to terms, and the elected governor will go back to his office, because I’m a democrat, and the National Assembly represents democracy.”

The Senate Deputy Whip defended the National Assembly’s previous intervention in the crisis, explaining, “We had to do what we did to safeguard lives and property, which is a fundamental objective of every government.”

Revealing ongoing mediation efforts, Nwebonyi added, “I believe that in no time, without announcing it formally, I believe that there are stakeholders that are working underneath to make sure that the problem is resolved, and very soon we shall see results.”

The senator also disclosed that National Assembly leadership has engaged with various stakeholders, including sole administrator Ibok Ete Ibas, to maintain peace and order in Rivers State while working toward the governor’s return to office.
