According to DAILY POST, former Governor of Sokoto State, Dalhatu Bafarawa, has voiced strong concern over the apparent decline in patriotism among Nigeria’s political leaders, cautioning that this trend could threaten the country’s unity and democratic development.
Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, the elder statesman expressed dismay over the diminishing space for opposition voices, warning that this erosion of political diversity poses a danger to Nigeria’s democratic future.
Bafarawa, who recently stepped away from active partisan politics, criticized the pattern of politicians defecting to the ruling party not out of ideology, but for personal benefit.
He observed that opposition parties are increasingly being weakened and absorbed by the ruling party, not to serve the public interest, but for selfish motives.
He also warned that the ongoing deterioration of democratic values and lack of political accountability could have serious consequences for the nation.
In particular, he criticized political leaders in the North for prioritizing personal interests while neglecting the well-being of their constituents.
He urged citizens to reflect on the current political, social, and economic difficulties facing the country and to make more informed decisions at the polls in upcoming elections.
Bafarawa emphasized that the electorate now bears the responsibility of choosing leaders who can truly move the country forward.
“The responsibility now lies with the voters. They are witnessing how Nigeria is moving backwards. This should be enough to guide them in choosing competent leaders come the next general elections,” he said.
Though no longer active in party politics, he affirmed his continued commitment to advocating on national matters, insisting that all Nigerians must accept some responsibility for the challenges the country faces today.
