According to Punch, Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has asserted that the supporters of Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, and others who oppose differing views, cannot silence him. Soyinka remains undeterred by the attacks on his character from Obi’s supporters, known as ‘Obidients’, during the run-up to the 2023 general elections.
Soyinka’s criticism of the Obidients’ conduct has not swayed him from his commitment to speaking out. Despite facing backlash for criticizing remarks made by Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed, Soyinka is steadfast in his resolve. In May 2023, he described Baba-Ahmed’s comments as “fascistic language”, which sparked criticism from Obi’s supporters on social media.
In a recent interview with Noble Nigeria, Soyinka reflected on his experience with online trolls and emphasized his unwavering stance. “Nobody, anybody on this earth who thinks he can stop me from telling the truth as I see it should get his or her head examined,” Soyinka declared.
Soyinka expressed disgust at the tactics used by some of Obi’s supporters to distort facts and orchestrate attacks against him. “Again, it has to do with education. I feel disgusted especially when facts are being ‘manufactured’. I read some of these things and I was disgusted. There is no other word for it, I really was disgusted. And I know it was orchestrated. The Internet has become so promiscuous and I know there is a relay mechanism that is triggered into action by those who control the trolls of the Internet,” he said….S££ MOR£
