General Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, has disclosed that more than 120,000 terrorists have surrendered to the Nigerian Army in the Northeast region, with women not included in this count.
During an interview with Arise TV from 18:44, General Musa revealed, “Over 120,000 terrorists have surrendered in the North East, Over 60,000 were children.”
The Defence Chief explained the terrorists’ evolving recruitment tactics, stating, “They used to go and attack a village, capture everybody, take all the adults, and force them into joining them. Now, it’s difficult for them to do that, and so what they do is that the women, they get them pregnant, and once they give birth, 4 months later, they take them in.”
Highlighting the concerning demographic pattern among those who surrendered, he noted, “Within 120,000, they have over 60,000 that are children. And to have that large number surrender, for us, that’s a win, is a success, that we’re able to pull them out.”
General Musa emphasized the importance of rehabilitation, explaining, “Because, for human nature, any child who grows in a society, what he sees is what he believes, that is natural. So, if they grow in a society where killing is natural, they come out to become brutal killers, and we wouldn’t want that to happen, and that’s why we’ve given them that support.”
The military leader highlighted the ongoing collaborative efforts with the FG and State governments in the North, saying, “We have worked with the Borno State government, we work with the federal government, and with the humanitarian agencies.
