The 2023 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tonye Cole, has stated that the word on the street is that Governor Siminalayi Fubara will be impeached if he does not align with the Martin Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly.

During an interview with Channels TV from 9:27, Tonye Cole noted that while it is unclear whether impeachment is imminent, it has always been a possibility.

He recalled that tensions between the executive and legislative arms heightened about a year ago, particularly following the demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex, which was linked to a move or intention to impeach the governor at the time. He highlighted that the issue has now resurfaced, raising fresh concerns.

Cole noted that although no official impeachment process has been initiated, he pointed out that public sentiment strongly suggests the governor is at risk if he does not cooperate with the current House of Assembly.

He described the situation as an unhealthy approach to governance, stressing that Governor Fubara must now decide how to handle the ongoing political challenges.

He said, “I don’t know whether it is imminent, but it has always been on the card. Part of what started this recent run of the whole Assembly being there was a demolition of the Assembly and what have you, was that there was a move to impeach the governor or an intention to impeach. So, that was very strong back then, maybe about a year ago, and now it is back on the table. Whether it’s been put before the House or not, the word on the street is that he will be impeached if he does not play ball with the current House of Assembly. It is not a very good way to govern a state but it is there, it’s right in front of him, he has to make a decision as to what he wants to do.”
