The recently released memoir of former military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, has sparked controversy, with Raees Abacha, the grandson of late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, strongly disputing its contents.

According to a report published by Daily Post on February 22, 2025, Raees took to social media on Saturday to react to Babangida’s book, Journey in Service, which revisits significant events in Nigeria’s political history. In the book, Babangida described Abacha as one of his greatest challenges, alleging that the late general attempted to remove him from power through a coup by spreading misinformation within the military.

In response, Raees Abacha dismissed these claims, arguing that his grandfather was a loyal friend who did everything possible to protect Babangida’s life and reputation. He accused Babangida of rewriting history to suit his narrative, stating that anyone who believes the book’s content is “following its author toward damnation.”

“If the lifespans of these two consequential figures were reversed, this treachery would never be discharged by General Abacha,” Raees wrote on his X handle. He further criticized Babangida, saying his “biggest headache” was not Abacha but his own thoughts and decisions, which earned him the nickname “Evil Genius.”

Babangida’s book has reignited debates over Nigeria’s past military regimes, with many reflecting on the complex relationship between the two former leaders. While some believe Babangida’s account, others argue that history should be examined from multiple perspectives.
