Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo shared a personal story to highlight his dedication to discipline and leadership. He told how he had to let his daughter go from working on his farm because she was always late.

In a report from VANGUARD, Obasanjo explained that when his daughter, who was studying Veterinary Medicine, came to his farm for hands-on experience, she didn’t arrive on time her first day. He said that after warning her, she was late again the next day, which led him to send her home that very moment. According to him, this surprised his employees and reinforced that everyone, including family members, must follow the same rules.

While meeting with Dr. Dayo Israel, the new Chairman of the Federal Medical Centre’s Board, Obasanjo used this experience to illustrate that strong leadership sometimes means making tough decisions, even if it causes disappointment. He insisted that true leaders need to be prepared to overcome obstacles and make hard choices for the benefit of all.

His words,

“Shortly after I left office as Head of State, my first daughter, who was then studying Veterinary Medicine at the University of Ibadan, joined my farm for practical experience during a long vacation. On her first day, she arrived at 7:15 a.m. instead of the usual 7:00 a.m. I warned her about the need to set a good example for other workers.

To my amazement, she was late again the following day. I did not hesitate to send her back right from the gate. This had a significant impact on my employees, who said, ‘If Baba could do this to his daughter, who are we?’’
