According to Vanguard, Mr. Obinna Udemba, a businessman from Anambra State, recently recounted his terrifying four-day experience after being abducted by kidnappers in December 2024.

His story sheds light on the brutality of the criminal groups terrorizing parts of Nigeria and the immense psychological and physical toll such ordeals leave on victims. Udemba’s abduction began as an ordinary drive to his village, but soon turned into a nightmare that would forever alter his perception of safety.

On December 10, 2024, while driving his Toyota Corolla to oversee a construction project in Ozubulu, Udemba noticed a Mercedes Benz SUV trailing him. Initially dismissing it as coincidence, his unease grew as the vehicle seemed to match his speed, maintaining a steady distance behind him. Little did he know, this was the start of an agonizing ordeal that would unfold just moments later when the SUV overtook him, blocked his path, and suddenly opened fire.

According to him, “I was driving my silver Toyota Corolla along the road to Ozubulu, when I noticed something strange. A Mercedes Benz SUV seemed to be tailing me. No matter how fast or slow I went, the vehicle maintained the same pace, staying close behind. At first, I dismissed it as a coincidence. Why would someone in a luxury vehicle like a Mercedes Benz be interested in a regular car like mine.”

The kidnappers quickly subdued Udemba, pulling him from his car and blindfolding him before driving him to an unknown location. Throughout the journey, he was kept disoriented and unaware of his surroundings. Along the way, he spoke with two other young men who had been abducted the previous night. The kidnappers’ demand for a hefty ransom marked the beginning of a prolonged period of fear, where Udemba and his fellow captives were subjected to constant threats and intimidation.

Held captive in a secluded area, Udemba endured days of mental and physical torment. The kidnappers made it clear that they would not release him until they received the ransom money, which his family worked tirelessly to gather. As the hours dragged on, Udemba’s hope for freedom rested solely on the willingness of his family to meet the kidnappers’ demand, which continued to grow as they pressured him for more money.

Despite the harrowing situation, Udemba found strength in his belief that his family would secure his release. The kidnappers, however, showed no mercy, continuing their demands while treating their captives as bargaining chips. After several days of captivity, the negotiations reached a breaking point, and a portion of the ransom was paid. The kidnappers, having received part of what they wanted, decided to release the victims under one final act of cruelty.

Udemba and the other freed hostages were taken to a remote location where they were ordered to flee into the darkness, as gunshots rang out behind them. Miraculously, they managed to survive the final ordeal and found their way to a safer area. After receiving help, Udemba and the others made their way back home, but the emotional scars of the abduction would linger.
