Tony Okocha, the APC Caretaker Chairman in Rivers State, has addressed questions about his party’s decision not to congratulate Governor Siminalayi Fubara on his recent 50th birthday, citing the governor’s own failure to acknowledge the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s birthday celebration.
In a media chat with Symfoni TV from 57:11, Tony Okocha pointed to what he sees as a breach in political courtesy. “When Wike, who is his Oga and our collective Oga, celebrated his 57th birthday, did the governor congratulate him?” Okocha asked. “He uses his mouth to say ‘my Oga’ when he’s referring to Wike, and all of you here will attest to the fact that he’s actually his boss.”
The APC chairman emphasized Wike’s role in Fubara’s political ascent: “Judging from how he came up until now, Wike was the one who brought him this far. But he didn’t even send a single message.” Okocha revealed that he had previously suggested the governor use Wike’s birthday as an opportunity for reconciliation. “I even came out and gave a hint; I said the governor should have taken advantage of Wike’s birthday and sent him, even if it is on a new scroll. But he didn’t; he didn’t even send a word.”
Defending his party’s position, he stated: “And then you expect me, a co-leader of the Renewed Hope Family, to begin to venerate somebody that holds our general leader in this disdain and scorn? That is a complete no.” He added on a personal note: “Or is it because I’m not a governor? I was 56 in December and he is celebrating 50 years now, I’m 6 years older than him.”
