In a video shared on Symfoni TV from 2:37, renowned Human Rights Activist, Ann-Kio Briggs, has voiced strong concerns about judicial involvement in Rivers State’s political landscape while emphasizing the importance of proper legal channels for addressing grievances.
Speaking with characteristic forthrightness, Briggs began by acknowledging her position as a non-legal professional while expressing skepticism about certain legal proceedings. “I don’t think so. But then, I’m not a lawyer, but I don’t think so,” she stated in the interview.
The activist then made a powerful statement about public resistance to judicial manipulation in Rivers State. “We cannot, as a people of River State, we cannot accept to be pushed around by one judgment or the other bought by one person or the other, manipulated by one person or the other,” Briggs declared, expressing deep concern about the integrity of certain judicial processes.
In a direct critique of the judiciary’s recent role, she stated, “The Judiciary has not come out very well in the crisis that has transpired in River State in the past, in the past one year.” This observation highlights growing public concern about the judiciary’s involvement in the state’s political matters.
However, Briggs also emphasized the importance of following proper legal channels for addressing political disagreements. Referring to recent governmental actions, she noted, “The governor has presented his budget. If anybody is unhappy with what the governor (Fubara) has done, the Judiciary is there; they should go to court.”
These statements reflect a complex stance on judicial involvement in Rivers State politics, while expressing skepticism about past judicial interventions, Briggs simultaneously affirms the court’s role as the proper venue for resolving political disputes. Her comments suggest a desire for more transparent and accountable judicial processes in handling political matters.
