Mubarak Bala, a Nigerian Freethinker, told of his struggle at the hands of government and religious fanatics after he renounced his faith.

Bala disclosed in an interview with Punch that he first separated from his faith in 2008, but he didn’t make his separation public until 2013. His family and community were incensed and shocked by this revelation, and they found it difficult to accept his choice.

In 2014, the freethinker recounted a traumatic event in which his family took him to a mental health facility because they thought he had become mentally sick due to his decision to leave the faith.

Futhermore, Mubarak Bala disclosed the widespread notion in his community that abandoning a religion is so grave that it may be punishable by death in accordance with Sharia law.

Bala was quoted as saying; “I left the religion in 2008. But I made it public in 2013. My family, friends, and associates did not take it lightly. They couldn’t accept it. They thought I was mentally ill. They said the religion was so beautiful that no one should leave it.”
