In 1990, a group of 15 courageous women founded Umoja, a village in Kenya, as a safe haven from the trauma they had endured. These women had survived s£xual violence at the hands of British troops and sought a place to heal and start anew.
Led by the visionary Rebecca Lolosoli, Umoja has grown into a thriving community of 47 mothers and 200 children, all fleeing harmful practices like domestic violence, child marriage, and female genítal mutilation (FGM) from their traditional Samburu communities.
Despite their humble lives, the women of Umoja have created a self-sufficient community where everyone’s basic needs are met. They earn a steady income through a campground for safari tourists, just a mile from the river, and an artisan center where they sell beautiful handmade jewelry.
