The Chief Imam of Lekki Central Mosque in Lagos, Ridwanullah Jamiu, has defended the mosque’s recently displayed banner stating that “Jesus Christ is Not God,” which has sparked significant controversy.

The image of the banner circulated on social media, prompting many to perceive it as an attack on the Christian faith.

However, Jamiu emphasized that Muslims have their own beliefs regarding Jesus, known as Isah in the Quran.

He pointed out that believing in Jesus is essential to being a Muslim, and any belief must align with the teachings of the Quran. According to the Quran, Jesus Christ is recognized as a messenger of God rather than as God himself.

Highlighting the principle of religious freedom, he questioned whether it was inappropriate to express their beliefs within their own community.

He argued that quoting a verse from the Quran and sharing it on their own territory to educate the congregation is a fundamental aspect of their faith. He affirmed their rights to freedom of religion and speech.

According to THE GUARDIAN, Jamiu said, “If you don’t believe in Jesus, you are not a Muslim. We are Muslims and anything we believe must be in consonant with the Quran and the Quran says Jesus Christ is not God, he’s a messenger of God. We quoted this verse in the banner. Is there anything wrong if we paste what we believe on our territory to educate our congregation? It’s a verse of the Quran. This is freedom of religion, freedom of speech.”
