Veteran Nigerian journalist and author Kanayo Esinulo has disclosed that the Israeli government was actively involved in supporting the Biafran side during the Nigerian Civil War.

Speaking on the Edmund Obilo Podcast from 0:23, Esinulo said the Israelis were not merely aware of the events unfolding during the war but were directly aligned with the Biafran cause. According to him, Israel’s involvement was not covert as they took sides with Biafran soldiers against the federal forces.

“I think the Israelis knew what was happening,” Esinulo stated during the interview. “They were involved on our side, they were not hiding it.”

His remarks add new depth to the historical understanding of the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970), a conflict that has long been viewed primarily through the lens of internal ethnic and political tensions. Esinulo’s comments suggest a more complex international dimension, raising questions about the roles of foreign powers in the conflict.

The Nigerian Civil War also known as the Biafran War led to the deaths of over a million people, mostly from the eastern region due to famine and military operations. While countries like France, Portugal and some Nordic nations were previously documented as sympathetic to the Biafran cause, Esinulo’s claim reinforces the belief that Israel may have also had strategic interests in the region.

Kanayo Esinulo, whose new book offers fresh insights into the post-war life and diplomacy of Biafran leader Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, insists that international alliances played a larger role than many Nigerians realize.

His comments have already sparked renewed debate among historians and political analysts about foreign influence in Nigeria’s most tragic and defining conflict.
