Political analyst Usman Yusuf has stated that he and Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi held direct meetings with armed bandit groups in several forests across Nigeria as part of efforts to better understand the country’s security challenges.

Yusuf made the disclosure in a video interview from 43:15 shared by SYMFONI TV, where he explained that the visits were aimed at gaining firsthand knowledge about the motivations and conditions surrounding banditry in the country. According to him, the engagement involved traveling into remote forest areas that are rarely accessed by government authorities or security forces.

He revealed that the team, which included Gumi and other delegates, visited as many as nine forests across the country where they held discussions with individuals involved in banditry. Yusuf emphasized that these meetings allowed them to interact directly with people whom many military leaders and political officials have never had the opportunity to speak with.

“I, Sheikh Gumi, and his delegates have gone into nine forests in this country. We’ve met all of these bad guys; we’ve met people that no general, no politician has sat down and talked with to understand, and we brought back information to the authorities,” Yusuf said during the interview.

According to him, the information gathered from those encounters was later shared with relevant authorities in order to contribute to possible solutions to Nigeria’s ongoing insecurity crisis.

Yusuf argued that meaningful dialogue and deeper understanding of the individuals involved in banditry could play a crucial role in addressing the root causes of violence in affected regions. He suggested that a lack of direct engagement with such groups may be one of the reasons the problem has persisted for years.

His remarks add to the ongoing national debate over how best to tackle insecurity, with some experts advocating dialogue and negotiation while others insist on stronger military action to dismantle criminal networks operating in remote forest areas across northern Nigeria. Read_More…
