Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has weighed in on the recurring calls for the creation of new states in Nigeria, describing such efforts as unrealistic under the current political climate. His comments come at a time when some groups across the country have been advocating for state creation as a way to address issues of marginalization and improve governance.

Speaking in a recent interview, Sani said while the idea of creating more states may sound appealing to some, it faces several legal and political roadblocks that make it nearly impossible to achieve. He stressed that the constitutional requirements for state creation are very stringent and involve multiple layers of legislative approvals, including from the National Assembly and the affected state assemblies.

According to the former senator, “Anyone pushing for new states now is only wasting their effort. It’s a complex and highly political process that requires two-thirds approval from various quarters. Given Nigeria’s current economic and political situation, it is unlikely to gain serious traction.”

Sani also warned that focusing too much on state creation could distract from more urgent matters such as insecurity, poverty, and the need for national unity. He called on political leaders and interest groups to focus on strengthening existing institutions and ensuring better governance rather than pushing for what he described as a “constitutional mirage.”

His remarks have sparked mixed reactions, with some agreeing that the push for more states may not be practical at the moment, while others argue that ignoring such demands could fuel further dissatisfaction in various regions.
