Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo, the Senior Pastor of the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA), has cautioned Christians against the misconception that paying tithe is a favor to God.
In a recent sermon broadcast via YouTube, Fatoyinbo emphasized that tithing is part of a covenant obligation and not an act of generosity toward God.
Preaching from Luke 16, Fatoyinbo declared, “You’re not doing God a favor by paying your tithe. I know that is sensitive, but I’m talking covenant, not English.” He explained that the kingdom of God operates by spiritual covenants and financial faithfulness, not emotional or intellectual understanding.
He cited the parable of the rich fool, who built bigger barns for his wealth but was ultimately called foolish by God. Fatoyinbo pointed out that covetousness and avarice—desiring what does not belong to you—are signs of breaking covenant principles. “In a covenant relationship, something belongs to God that doesn’t belong to you. Don’t take it,” he warned.
He taught that money, or “unrighteous mammon,” is the least test in God’s kingdom and is the beginning of divine trust. Quoting Luke 16:10–11, he said, “If you’re not faithful with money, who will commit true riches to you?” According to him, “True riches are the riches that never finish—wealth that endures, peace, divine favor, and generational blessings.”
Fatoyinbo urged believers not to approach Christianity with intellectual logic but to embrace it spiritually through obedience to divine principles. He concluded with a prophetic declaration: “Fear not, little flock. It is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. You are meant to rule with Christ.
