Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has sharply criticized the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), accusing the party of financial mismanagement despite generating substantial revenue. Speaking during an interview with Symfoni TV, Wike expressed disbelief that a party reportedly making between ₦12 billion and ₦20 billion could fail to pay for an obligation as minor as ₦7 million.
The minister, who addressed a gathering of FCT lawyers, did not mince words as he called out the PDP’s alleged negligence in handling its financial responsibilities. His comments have sparked widespread discussion, particularly given his history with the party and his recent role in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Wike’s statement, “You make N12-20 billion naira, but to pay for something 7 million, you won’t pay,” underscores his growing frustration with the party’s leadership and financial decisions. Although he did not specify the exact nature of the ₦7 million expense, his remarks suggest that he views the PDP’s financial conduct as reckless or irresponsible.
This is not the first time Wike has publicly criticized his former party. The former governor of Rivers State has consistently questioned the party’s handling of funds, especially after the 2023 general elections. His latest comments add to ongoing tensions between him and PDP leadership, with some interpreting his remarks as a further attempt to distance himself from the opposition party.
Wike’s remarks come at a time when Nigeria’s political landscape is undergoing significant shifts. As a former PDP strongman who played a key role in the party’s affairs, his transition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and his appointment as FCT Minister have put him in a unique position to critique his former allies.
His comments may also fuel further internal divisions within the PDP, especially among party members who have previously raised concerns about accountability. If the allegations gain traction, they could impact the party’s public image and fundraising efforts ahead of future elections.
While PDP leaders have yet to issue an official response to Wike’s claims, his comments are expected to generate significant debate within Nigeria’s political circles in the coming weeks.
