He highlighted that these disputes often extend beyond cattle theft to land ownership issues.
According to report from The Sun, Governor Mutfwang conveyed that the government’s stance is not one of opposition against any particular group. He pointed out that numerous Fulani herders work collaboratively with local farmers, demonstrating that peaceful coexistence is indeed possible. He emphasized that while it is easy to frame these conflicts in terms of criminal acts, they are largely rooted in land ownership disputes.
The governor stressed the necessity of allowing all community members the opportunity to engage in agricultural activities without undue restrictions. He believes that empowering individuals to farm is key to enhancing local economies and nurturing sustainable growth within the region. He noted that when people feel secure in their ability to cultivate the land, it not only benefits them but also contributes to the overall prosperity of the community.
Mutfwang elaborated on the complexities of these conflicts, arguing that they often stem from deep-seated struggles for control rather than mere disagreements over land use. He explained that these issues are multi-dimensional, involving economic, social, and cultural dimensions, indicating the need for a holistic approach to conflict resolution.
His words, “People even try to claim it is about cattle rustling, but you don’t wipe out a village because three cows were stolen. This is land seizure. It’s about control, not conflict.”
