A former Nigerian military commander, Gen Anthony Atolagbe has criticized what he describes as an obsolete law that allows individuals arrested with illegal firearms to secure bail for a mere 2,500 naira.

Major General Anthony Atolagbe, who previously served as Military Force Commander in Plateau State, expressed his frustration during an interview from 11:13 with Channels TV about the ineffectiveness of such outdated legislation.

“In a particular state, the law says that if you catch somebody with arms at a particular point in time, you can bail the person with 2,500 naira,” General Atolagbe stated. “So you deploy military and they arrest people, the second day the man is in his house. And he’s going to tell his neighbors that ‘don’t worry, I will kill all of you, you are the ones that went to report me.'”.

When pressed for additional details about this law, the general explained, “Yes, if you arrest somebody with weapons or you see somebody using weapons, you arrest him. It is a 1973 kind of law, and it was just changed recently.”

The commander further highlighted that the issue of land grabbing has been in existence in Plateau state under the former governors but they had done nothing to rectify the issue.
