Former Minister of Information and Culture, Professor Jerry Gana has criticised the All Progressives Congress for failing to address critical national issues despite being in power for nearly a decade, contrasting their performance with the achievements of the Peoples Democratic Party in its early years.
Speaking in an interview on TVC News, Gana said the PDP under President Olusegun Obasanjo inherited a country in disarray when it took over from the military in 1999 but was able to stabilise the nation in just two years.
“But you have about 10 years, you can’t solve it in 10 years?. We solved it in two years when we took over from the military. Under Obasanjo, things were stable, so stable that the world gave us $18 billion,” Gana stated.
He explained that the Obasanjo administration quickly restored political stability, rebuilt institutions and re-established Nigeria’s credibility on the global stage. These reforms, he noted were instrumental in securing an $18 billion debt relief package from the Paris Club of creditors, a move that freed up resources for development.
Gana argued that stability and disciplined governance were the hallmarks of the PDP’s early years, enabling swift progress on both economic and political fronts. In contrast, he lamented that after almost a decade in power, the APC government has been unable to effectively tackle insecurity, economic hardship and other pressing national challenges.
The elder statesman urged the current administration to learn from the PDP’s early strategies, stressing that strong leadership, unity, and strategic planning are essential to solving Nigeria’s problems.
His remarks add to ongoing political debates about performance, governance and the legacy of different administrations in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
