According to a post shared on her official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Lauretta Onochie, a former aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has praised former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, for clarifying what she described as long-standing misinformation about Buhari’s presidential victory.
Onochie’s reaction followed Mustapha’s controversial comments made during the launch of a book titled According to the President, held in Abuja on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. At the event, Mustapha rejected the widely held belief that former Lagos governor and current President Bola Ahmed Tinubu played a decisive role in Buhari’s emergence as president in 2015. He argued instead that Buhari’s popularity and the collective effort of many within the APC propelled him to power.
Lauretta Onochie, responding on social media, stated that the revelation marked the expiration of what she termed a political falsehood. “Every lie has an expiry date,” she wrote. “Yesterday, the lie that BAT (Bola Ahmed Tinubu) made Buhari president expired. Thank you, Boss Mustapha, for puncturing the lies of those unsuccessfully trying to rewrite history.”
Onochie went further to claim that President Tinubu never supported Buhari’s candidacy in 2014, adding fuel to the ongoing debate about internal party dynamics and historical revisionism within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The former presidential aide’s remarks have reignited conversations surrounding Nigeria’s political alliances, loyalty, and the true architects behind Buhari’s electoral success. Her statements have been met with mixed reactions, with supporters praising her boldness while critics accuse her of stoking political division.
As political discourse intensifies ahead of the 2027 elections, the past remains a battleground for competing narratives within Nigeria’s ruling elite.
