Former Zamfara State politician and recently departed APC member Kabir Marafa has revealed that Senator Abdulaziz Yari requested him and other senators to abandon their support for Ahmed Lawan in favor of Bukola Saraki during the 2015 Senate presidency contest.
Speaking in an interview with Arise TV from 13:09, Marafa described the last-minute change of strategy that he claims marked the beginning of his disagreement with Senator Yari. “Yari called me—those who were in the hall at that time—and said that we should abandon Ahmed Lawan and support Bukola Saraki. And I said, ‘Well, you can’t do that after we’ve agreed, after we’ve come this far. Now at the 11th hour, you’re calling me to support Bukola Saraki.’ Bukola Saraki is my friend, but I’m not going to do it. That was the beginning of our fight,” he stated.
Marafa emphasized that President Tinubu was fully aware of the circumstances surrounding their disagreement. “And Mr. President—President Tinubu now—knew exactly what happened, and he knew the role he played,” he said.
The former politician described the current political landscape in Zamfara State, highlighting three distinct factional camps. “Now, surprisingly, we have three camps in Zamfara: the camp of the Minister, the camp of Yari, and my own camp. Consolidation. And His Excellency Bola Tinubu knew exactly what happened. In his maiden speech—the speech he delivered immediately after he was declared winner of the election—he mentioned the three of us,” Marafa explained.
He expressed disappointment over what he perceives as unequal treatment in federal appointments despite his role in Tinubu’s campaign. “Now, all these two groups were rewarded. Their members were accommodated. But I, as his coordinator in Zamfara State, my people were not rewarded,” he said.
