According to a report by The independent, Comrade Ayoyinka Oni, who serves as the Lagos State Chairman of the African Action Congress (AAC), has condemned the federal government over what he described as a shameless celebration of former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, despite serious corruption allegations hanging over him.

In a report published by Independent Nigeria on June 22, 2025, Oni voiced his displeasure at the presidency’s recent decision to send public birthday greetings to Bello, who remains a wanted individual by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged financial misconduct.

The AAC chairman expressed disbelief that an administration known for preaching anti-corruption could turn around and openly felicitate someone accused of siphoning public funds.

Oni said the federal government’s gesture reflects a disturbing level of double standards, where those linked to corruption are still celebrated instead of being held accountable. He stated that such actions reinforce a system where impunity thrives and the law appears ineffective against politically connected individuals.

According to Oni, it is disheartening that despite the EFCC’s public declaration regarding Bello’s alleged diversion of N80 billion during his time as governor, the presidency could still choose to acknowledge him in such a positive manner.

He warned that this sends a damaging message to the public—that some individuals, due to their status or affiliations, can escape justice no matter the severity of the accusations against them.

“Imagine a Yahaya Bello that was declared wanted by the EFCC for diverting N80 billion for his personal use. Today, the presidency is wishing him a happy birthday. We are not a serious country.”

The AAC leader stressed that such conduct undermines whatever progress the country claims to have made in fighting corruption. He noted that instead of facing consequences, politicians with pending graft cases often enjoy privileges and are shielded from prosecution by powerful allies.

Oni’s comments touch on a wider concern shared by many Nigerians: the inconsistent approach to fighting corruption, especially when influential figures are involved. Public reactions have continued to trail the presidency’s birthday message to Bello, with citizens and advocacy groups accusing the government of enabling lawlessness.

The EFCC had, in previous months, issued a public notice declaring Yahaya Bello wanted in connection with the alleged embezzlement of N80 billion in public funds during his tenure as governor. Despite that, the former governor has continued to enjoy visible support from high-ranking figures in the country’s political space.

As highlighted by Independent Nigeria, Oni emphasized that until Nigerian leaders begin to lead by example and uphold the rule of law, the idea of a truly democratic system will remain far-fetched.

He concluded by encouraging the public to demand transparency from those in power and reject any attempt to normalize corruption at the top level of governance.

“Until leaders begin to take accountability seriously, Nigeria cannot be said to practice genuine democracy.”
