Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has weighed in on the widely circulated image of Vice President Kashim Shettima carrying a shovel during the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Olayinka reacted to Shettima’s symbolic gesture, describing it as a display of public drama rather than an act of sincere tribute.

The vice president had been seen carrying a shovel at the burial site in Daura, Katsina State a traditional Islamic gesture often performed by loved ones as a sign of respect during interment.

Olayinka wrote, “Someone that could not carry the weight of a failed economic policy is carrying shovel at a funeral. Na wa!” His statement appeared to criticize what he suggested was a contrast between Shettima’s ceremonial actions and his performance in office.

While many Nigerians have praised Shettima’s gesture as an expression of humility and cultural respect, others, like Olayinka, have interpreted it as a calculated attempt at optics and political performance.

The burial of former President Buhari attracted high-ranking dignitaries, including sitting and former government officials, religious leaders, and traditional rulers.

However, Shettima’s moment with the shovel has sparked a side debate on social media, with netizens divided over whether such symbolic acts have genuine meaning or are merely staged for public perception.

Olayinka’s remarks add a political layer to what many had considered a solemn moment, once again highlighting the sensitivity surrounding public gestures by top officials in Nigeria’s highly polarized political landscape.
